Non-standard bracing systems

Engineers often construct column-beam buildings with hinged connections and diagonal bracing. The usual solution consists of a slab with in-plane rigidity, and at least 3 vertical bracing elements. There are many other good arrangements, but proving the goodness of an arrangement leads to a complicated mathematical problem. The aim of the project is to develop alternative solutions where less bracing elements are used in the slab and this is compensated by more diagonal bracings among columns. In this way, it is easy to produce a bracing systems in cases where the design of a rigid slab faces obstacles.
