Introduction to Structural Design

The aim of this first-year course is to present basic concepts,
methods and applications of statics. We build on mathematical and
physical knowledge acquired in secondary school. The aim is to
understand certain phenomena and concepts that are central to the
design of load-bearing structures. These are illustrated by simple
examples and by highlighting the relationship with already known
mathematical and physical concepts. Our goal is to familiarize
students with the basics of engineering thinking and structural
design.

Main topics include geometric and mechanical interpretation of the
concept of equilibrium. Conditions of equilibrium of structures,
reactions.  Modelling of structures and loads, simplifications.
Structural requirements.
