A popular construction task among students and engineering students is to design and build large towers made of small wooden elements (Jengga, Kapla, KEVA, etc.). The tallest such tower is also recorded in the Guinness Book of Records. The most spectacular part of the construction projects is the demolishing of the tower, which usually attracts a large audience.
The aim of the TDK research is to examine the dynamics of the collapse and to predict protective distance that the safety of the viewers requires during the collapse. Practical experience shows that the distance is surprisingly small compared to the height of the tower. Recommended tasks: performing model experiments, analysis of videos, developing an approximate formula based on them, optionally a theoretical model or computer simulations.
